"I need the viewer to connect with the ocean: feel the spray on their cheeks and hear the soft plash of a wave on flat sands."

With a keen interest in tides, currents, wave action and the ever-changing moods of the sea, Penny literally pulls the viewer into her paintings and her knowledge of the Cornish sea is evident in her work.

It is no surprise that Penny is a keen sea swimmer. Swimming opens her mind to improving her art practise.

Penny has written a book detailing a particular swimming adventure in Mount’s Bay. The book, on sale in The Old Coastguard, is a must for anyone wishing to enjoy a similar experiences.

"When preparing for a painting I work outside, sketching and drawing speedily so that my response to the surroundings is immediate."

Penny studied Zoology at Sheffield University and then moved into research at Cambridge for a couple of years. The training made her very aware of her surroundings and she loves to analyse every detail of nature.

Later, she learned about colour, design and art history through her experience as an art and antiques dealer and during that time began painting and drawing. Since moving to Cornwall she specialises in land and seascape paintings, largely in oils.
